Tariffs, reduced VAT rates, and in some cases grants are available to offset the costs of installing microgeneration technologies and provide an ongoing income.

Reduced rate VAT

This applies to properties classed as residential for VAT purposes. VAT is charged at a reduced rate of 5% for energy saving technologies. This includes most renewable energy and heating systems. See HRMC website for further details.

Feed in tariffs for micro power generation

Microgeneration systems that are connected to the electricity grid can qualify for Feed in Tariffs. This means that you are paid for all the electricty you generate using the microgeneration technology. This electricity may then be used (for free) or exported back into the grid.

The system is quite complex and tariffs vary between the different technologies. In the case of Solar Photovltaics, the feed in tariffs can generate an income well in excess of many conventional forms of investment. A list of the tariffs can be seen in the Feed in Tariff table of rates. Please contact us for further information.

Renewable Heat Incentive

Further ‘incentives’ may be in the pipeline; the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme which would provide generous cash incentives to install heat pumps from April 2011 is on hold pending the Spending Review. See statement from DECC issued 27th July:

Update following the Annual Energy Statement, 27/7/10:

This Government is fully committed to taking action on renewable heat; this is a crucial part of ensuring we meet our renewables targets, cutting carbon and ensuring energy security. The Government is considering responses to the Renewable Heat Incentive consultation and will set out detailed proposals on how to take forward action on renewable heat through the Spending Review.

So watch this space for the latest news.

Grants?

The grant programmes below are still running. It it likely that CERT’s may well continue.

Depending on the type of installation and programme, up to 50% of the cost of installing can be approved.

The following table shows some of the different types of funding available towards microgeneration technologies under various programmes:
