Project description Built in 1874, St. John’s Church had been heated by coke-fired boiler, gas-fired boiler, under-seat tubular units and most recently by quartz-ray units overhead. The Team Ministry was determined to install an effective system and decided on a ground-source heat pump from Arctic Air Cumbria.
System Overview We incorporated the ground-source heat pump with a gas boiler to provide extra heating during the winter season and new radiators were installed inside the church alongside the pews. There was also new heating for the faithful organist! Vertical ground collectors draw heat from the church compound and feed it to the plant room where two Dimplex Heat pumps (CoP 3.32 each) operate and distribute hot water to the radiators. We also supplied and configured the controls and thermostats for the system to function exactly when it is needed: during Sunday services and weekday meetings. Surface pipe work, though lower in cost, was not practicable in this project due to area restrictions. We therefore had to carry out borehole-sinking for the external section of the ground-source heat pump. Drilling 100m deep required specialist equipment sourced locally and took 2 weeks. Trenches were then dug running from the boreholes round the church to the plant room where the heat pumps are located. What Ken said... “Determined not to make another mistake by installing an ineffective system, visits were made to sites using modern heating systems. Of all the sites, the most impressive was the ground-source unit in a village hall. Cost of installation and operating expenses compared well with other schemes.
In every way, Arctic Air matched our expectations by visiting, surveying, designing and overcoming obvious problems in the building design of a church. From the day the contract was signed Arctic Air carried out installation of the system without disrupting church services in any way. The workmen were pleasant, tidy, efficient and always available to answer our enquiries.
We are confident that the ground-source heat pump will prove cheaper to run than any of the alternative systems, giving protection against increased charges for any other system over the long term. The complimentary response of the church members who use the warm building proves that the decision was correct. We are so proud of the system that we would welcome visits by anyone interested to look around.” -Ken Jordan, Team Ministry
