What is solar water heating all about?

Solar heating is a renewable energy technology that captures free energy from the sun’s rays to heat domestic hot water supply for a home, office building or even a factory.

It works by ‘collecting’ sunshine from an unshaded location, such as a roof or open field, and heating up a refrigerant solar fluid flowing through the solar collectors. This heated fluid then goes to the solar pumping station where a heat exchanger transfers the heat to the circulating domestic hot water (much like the heat pump cycle).

Solar heating can be integrated with underfloor heating and conventional heating systems, and can also be supplemented by heat pump systems. Arctic Air also installs electrical sensors and controls monitor external conditions to activate the system during optimum periods to meet the hot water demand.

Why solar heating?

  • Free to use energy from the sun, and it does not always have to be sunny
  • Combines well with underfloor heating and heat pumps
  • Provides significant energy savings on heating domestic water during summer months
  • Helps achieve a better rating in the Code for Sustainable Homes

Because Arctic Air are Accredited Installers (under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme for Solar Thermal systems),  you can be sure of getting a helping hand through government grants.
