How does it work?

As the name suggests, the heating comes from beneath the floor, thanks to a network of pipes. It works much in the same way as your typical radiator, only more efficiently. Heated water from, say, your heat pump, is fed to the manifold where it is distributed into various underfloor pipes. The water then winds its way around the underfloor system, radiating heat evenly over the whole room.

Underfloor LayingUnderfloor heating can be integrated into different types of floors (e.g. concrete or wood-joist) and is installed either inside or beneath a weight-distribution layer. It works efficiently with screed layers and sufficient floor insulation. This layer is heated with warm water flowing through the pipes by conduction, up to the surface of the floor. From there, heat is emitted by radiation.

The temperature of the rooms can be controlled individually via thermostats and the system can run with low-temperatures to heat a room as effectively as conventional means, thanks to large surface areas involved.

It can also perform a cooling effect during summer months to form a surface-temperature control system.

Why get underfloor heating?

  • Cost-effective installation - with lower temperatures required, energy savings can be made
  • Comfortable room heating - temperatures are well-distributed to provide warmth where it is required: nearer to the feet than to the head
  • Hygienic - there is no dust blown as with radiators, and warm floors reduce occurrence of condensation and dust mites
  • Can be used with other heating systems - it suits energy-saving equipment such as heat pumps and solar heating systems
  • No maintenance costs on the pipes - the pipes are corrosion-resistant and diffusion-tight
  • Unobtrusive - because it is part of the floor it allows for maximum room utilisation
  • Safe - there is no risk of burns or cuts from sharp edges as with radiators
  • Simple user control - room thermostats can be programmed to control temperatures

Because underfloor heating can be adapted to new construction or renovations, Arctic Air can also install it in conjunction with our other services: heat pumps, solar heating, screed and floor insulation.
